Gemstone Size

Gemstone Size

You must focus on a gemstones beauty in conjunction to its size. If a gemstone is cut too large for its color density, it will display the wrong color, which lowers its value. For example, were a sapphire strictly cut to bulk up its size, the resulting gemstone might display too dark in color or show streaks, thereby decreasing its beauty and overall value. The raw gemstone’s color density and unique inclusion fingerprint determine how large and of what shape it should be cut.

Buying Tips

Be aware not to shop for gemstones by carat weight alone, because the size may not be what you expect. Since gemstones differ in density from diamonds, their sizes do not equal the corresponding size of diamonds. To illustrate, imagine two marbles of the same size, one made of glass and the other of foam. Surely the foam one is lighter in weight. Now if you asked for a 1 pound glass marble and a 1 pound foam marble, which is bigger. It takes a very large foam marble to weigh 1 pound.

Similarly, if a diamond and a ruby were both 1 carat in weight, the ruby would be smaller because it weighs more than diamond; it is more dense. For this reason, Karat includes the physical dimensions of our gemstones, which we measure in millimeters (mm).
