Gemstone Educational Guide

Please use the guide below to educate yourself on the essential factors and characteristics for determining quality gemstones. It is our belief at Karat that with the proper knowledge our customers will make the best investments for their loved ones.

Colors

Gemstones are prized for their purity of their color, the depth of tone, and the color saturation. Color is the dominant factor for gemstones and the single most important regarding price. At Karat we offer only the highest-quality colored gemstones available. Practically all gemstones today are treated to enhance their color. The most popular of treatment is heating, common with aquamarine, citrine, amethyst, sapphire, ruby and tanzanite, pearls are routinely bleached and irradiation performed on nearly all colors of topaz.more...

Clarity

Clarity in a gemstone is different from clarity and the grading systems for diamonds. There are flaws present in all but the most extravagantly expensive gemstones of the world. There is not a standard for clarity in the industry. It is not uncommon for a visually flawless beautiful colored emerald to be more expensive than its diamond counterpart. more...

Cut

The term "Ideal Cut" isn’t applicable when referring to colored gemstones as it is in diamonds. Many gemstones are cut into creative nonstandard shapes to either maximize the use of the rough or raw stone or to provide more interest in the final jewelry piece. more

Size

Since carat is a measure of weight and gemstones unlike diamonds vary in density and therefore weight varies substantially from one type of gemstone to another. Therefore precious gemstones are measure by physical dimensions most commonly referring to diameter when viewed from above. more...

Enhancements

Enhancing the stone…Unlike diamonds the majority of gemstones in the marketplace today have been treated to enhance their appearance or color. Unenhanced Gemstones that have not been treated but still exhibit exceptional color and clarity demand extravagant prices. The most prevalent enhancement treatment almost universally is heat treatment to enhance color. It is permanent, and requires no special care of the gemstone on the owners&rs part. Other treatments such as infusion of colorless oil, wax or resin to improve clarity require more or less special care to avoid damaging the enhancement.more...
